@samuelszuchan: Lee Kuan Yew made a calculation most Western leaders never considered. If a soldier's family did not own their home, that soldier would eventually realize he was defending the property of the rich. So Lee built a system where nearly every family owned something worth defending. In 1959, three out of four Singaporeans lived in squatter settlements. Then in 1961, a fire in Bukit Ho Swee destroyed 2,800 homes in a single day, leaving 16,000 homeless. Lee promised new homes in nine months. He delivered. Then he kept building. The construction mattered less than what came next: redesigning who had a stake in the nation. The state acquired 90% of the land. Every worker's paycheck was automatically docked into a mandatory savings fund. When a young couple married, they drew from savings they'd already accumulated to buy a flat. Monthly payments rarely touched take-home pay. Owning a home became something that simply happened. You got married, you walked into an HDB office, you moved in. In America, buying a home means a decade of saving, credit scores, bidding wars, and market timing before you ever hold a key. The median first-time buyer is now 38. In the UK, a third of millennials may never own at all. Singapore went from 29% homeownership in 1970 to 90% today. Among the poorest 10% of households; 84%. Every parent whose son served Singapore's mandatory national service owned the flat they lived in. The country their son was defending was also theirs. A deed was that reason made tangible. A nation where 84% of the poorest families own their home is a nation where nearly everyone has something to lose. A nation where the median buyer is 38 and the bottom rungs keep disappearing is slowly sorting its citizens into those with a stake and those without one. Only one of those holds together. The other eventually asks what it's holding together for.

Brilliant idea. And he is morally correct. Why defend someone else’s home if you have none? And the forced saving model to handle home acquisition is genius. A home you can enjoy now and it grows in value. It’s a better investment than in social security that you might not live long enough to enjoy.

While Lee Kuan Yew had his flaws, he stood out for his intelligence and pragmatic approach, grounded in a realistic assessment of human nature and societal dynamics.
