"I make non-political art, I don't have any social commentary" = "I severely lack self reflection and I am unable to understand how the social and material conditions surrounding me make their way into my art"

The comment about social commentary is so mind boggling to me because in my mind the entire purpose of science fiction genre is social commentary. It’s a speculative genre that comments on how the systems and structures of the present may have consequences on the future.

it is impossible to produce apolitical art. all art is social commentary.

i love hail mary, but i dont understand how anyone can write something about a potential future and thonk for a second that their work is entirely apolitical. although, a friend made a good point that its actually not a bad thing to regard "climate change is real and needs to be dealt with" as apolitical. cause if its a fact accepted by all parties, then its not a political point of contention. i would like to live in a world where we could genuinely consider climate change as apolitical

This book was so boring that I forgot I'd already read it and ended up reading it again. Definitely not his strongest work 😂.

I am beyond tired of “politic bad” people not understanding that politics track 1:1 with morality. As an author, if your character makes a moral decision, that’s inherently political. It shows the characters worldview.

He really is a bad writer - the only intrigue in his books is the accurate science. I feel like he lacks the ability to understand other people's emotions. In PHM he has to force the main character to feel sad that his crew died and he does this by saying, "I'm sad my crew died because they were my crew." He's emotionless.

him making that comment makes me question whether he actually wrote Project Hail Mary. Are we sure he didn't have a ghost writer create it? (and after watching this video, i am even more convinced that maybe he didn't write it)

There is the possibility that he thinks he is the enlightened apolitical centrist who is immune to ideology, but there are also people who think that politics is just “a thing I don’t like” or “a thing that’s controversial to me.” Both are wrong but for different reasons.

counterpoint: the biggest gap in his social commentary vis a vis climate change plots is that he basically wrote the whole world reluctantly cooperating to take on the threat, and there was no dissident reactionary political movement calling the astrophage a fraud and talking about how the sun goes on regular cycles anyway. While nothing in the world is truly apolitical, that was shockingly abstinent from a very contemporary political phenomenon, and it's one of the weak parts of the background.
