@newslionsa: A reminder of Nelson Mandela’s remarkable journey from political prisoner to president. In 1994 he was elected South Africa's first Black leader. However, 42 years before, on August 26th, 1952, he received his first prison sentence. He got a nine-month suspended term for leading the Defiance Campaign, a nationwide non-violent civil disobedience movement against apartheid laws. During his life, Mandela was jailed for a total of 27 years before being released in 1990.
