I need to just start with saying that kids really love the movie. So I think that’s definitely worth mentioning. If it turns out that this is just visual brainrot slop (which I don’t think it is)… there’s at least 100 things kids are watching on their iPads that are damaging their brains more than this. Let’s not be joyless scolds to any kids in our lives who probably just like what this movie has to offer. Also as adults we all have our own guilty pleasures, so if there’s truly nothing of value in this movie for kids, if they had fun and smiled, that’s really just a good enough reason for it exist. That being said, I used to share your perspective, and was really critical of the first movie, but have changed my mind. I enjoyed this one so much in fact I’ve seen it multiple times. Being a lifelong Nintendo fan probably has something to do with that. I think you really need to first recognize that they made exactly the movie they wanted to make. All of the things you or I would want to see in this movie out of our reverence for its place in our culture, are things that Miyamoto looked at and said ‘nope’. As a lifelong Nintendo fan (often frustrated by their decisions) I can tell you that they often look at great ideas and just say ‘nope’. HD graphics for Wii? Nope, Online multiplayer? Nope. CDs instead of Cartridges? Nope. I think you’ve got to consider that there are valid reasons when you set out to make a movie like this that you could look at Plot, suspense, character, motifs, themes and say ‘nope’. Nintendo wants this to be a spectacle, they want kids to love it, they want the absolute diehards who’ve played everything to love it. They don’t want to do anything character wise that would damage the brand. I think they’ve been at least moderately successful with those goals by looking at the box office. If these games were just ‘commercials’ there would be a new game releasing with them, but there isn’t. You may think that all of those goals do not mutually exclude a compelling story etc, but they may not see it that way. Every shot costs money, every shot is a decision. From interviews I’ve heard their main focus when writing was to ask ‘wouldn’t it be fun?’
