Telling eachother you have kids or not should be right away. Meeting the kids is a different story. You should at least wait till you see if things have the potential to be longer term before the kids are brought into it ( a few months ).

6 months is a long time to build trust and a connection with someone. To be kept in the dark about something this important he had every right to feel caught off guard. Like you said it’s not about kids it’s about being transparent and taking away someone’s right to make an informed decision
