This is exactly why in the spinoff I'm fully on Malcolms side and questioning why no one stopped to be like "hey Malcolm/dad how come you basically went no contact with your family and hid us from them?" Oh well bc they put the future of the family on his shoulders simply bc he excelled in school, and he wasn't "allowed" to stray from the path they claimed he NEEDED to take, but they never gave him a shoulder to lean on, a comforting voice, a safe space to run to, and planned to fully take advantage of his brains and the money they expected him to make with it

Tbh I think them trying to keep him humble was what fueled his complicated ego, like if they’d just cared a little more he wouldn’t feel the need to be the smartest in the time all the time because he knows he’s enough
