oh I miss these sounds so badly...just got back from Okinawa and was in Hokkaido last Sept & Fukuoka earlier. Tokyo regularly for work & Kyoto,Osaka too.

There are two main sounds: "Piyo-piyo" (a bird chirping) for the north-south direction, and "Kakkou" (a cuckoo bird) for the east-west direction. The train platform’s bird sounds are also for the same purpose.
