Hear me out: the green leaves from your trial could be transposed to textured tree bark! And even like mossy patches on the tree. Also-Could some of the visual interest come from the leaves being multi colored? Variegated embroidery floss, strand made of mixture of different individual colors, bi/tri color blocked, or sew extra texture onto an already sewn leaf? Also also, hanging leaves in the furthest back hoop or hung in between?

My little brain is working over time... but what if, you stitched over water soluable paper/fabric to help create with the 3D images. You can wash it away once its stabilised.
