don't forget to check r/BIFLfails too, though! some of these old standby brands went down in quality SEVERELY in recent years. I almost got 300$ shoes that people have raved about for YEARS on BIFL the year after the brand completely changed the materials and craftsmanship quality :\

It’s tricky because so many recommendations are “my vacuum has lasted for 30 years” but that same brand isn’t making them the same way anymore. 2026 vacuum is not the same as 1996 vacuum, even if the label is the same

My current hospital work bag is my son’s Patagonia school backpack that I got for him 16 years ago. The zipper finally busted last year, I took it to the Patagonia store, and after calling everyone over to oh and ah over how old it was, and fan-girling on having the original date tag still in it, they took it to repair and shipped it back to my home at no charge!

And this is the conundrum of how it is expensive to be poor .. you have to typically pay a lot more money for that item that's going to last you and somebody who does not have the disposal income is going to buy the cheaper version which needs to be replaced every few years or every however long. if you have the money, and the knowledge, I suppose you are able to buy something that initially costs more but saves you money in the long run... it's crazy. My next set of cookware is going to be stainless steel as I've also come to this conclusion that I would rather have something that lasts a long time then just grab something new because I can afford it... 😂💀

A crib mattress instead of a dog bed. Dog beds are like $100+ for large dogs and SUPER hard to wash. I got a crib mattress off Facebook marketplace instead and it’s lasted 6 years since then.

I recommend checking r/BIFLfail too! People post products they thought would be BIFL-worthy that broke/fell apart/etc. Check there for products you're researching so you don't repeat someone else's mistake

just be careful bc they have caught on. if you see a bunch of recos for a specific product and all the accts are under 6mos old, red flag. also if you see a thread that has mostly comments from like 2 yrs ago, then 1-2 random comments from 3 months ago promoting a product, also a red flag
