proxy vs load balancer vs api gateway — the difference isn't what they do. it's where they sit. all three live on the same wire between your client and your backend. draw one line for the public internet and the whole thing untangles: → a forward proxy sits ABOVE that line, next to the client. the website never sees you, it sees the proxy. that's corporate filtering and privacy tools. → a reverse proxy sits BELOW it, in front of your servers. the user connects to it, and it decides which internal service answers. nginx is the classic one. → a load balancer is a reverse proxy with one job: spread traffic across many identical copies of the same service, and stop sending it to the ones that died. → an api gateway sits in the same slot, but in front of many DIFFERENT services. one public entry point, path-based routing, and the part people miss — auth, rate limits, api keys, validation, logging. without it, every service reimplements all of that on its own. and yes, they overlap. a reverse proxy can load balance. a gateway can proxy. a load balancer can terminate tls. they're not always separate boxes. same position in the architecture. very different jobs. #systemdesign #backendengineering #devops #apigateway #softwarearchitecture
