Munao Zongge Festival
Munao Zongge is the most magnificent traditional festival of the Jingpo people inhabiting Dehong, Yunnan Province, China, and a precious national intangible cultural heritage.
In the local Jingpo dialect, “Munao” refers to grand group dancing, and “Zongge” means joyful gathering. The festival is annually celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, lasting 3 to 4 consecutive days.
During the grand ceremony, towering sacred totem pillars named Munao Shidong are erected at the center of the venue, engraved with sun, mountain and ancestral totems symbolizing the origin of the Jingpo nation .
Dancers in gorgeous ethnic costumes follow veteran leaders, circling in orderly lines with steady steps and rhythmic shoulder movements, accompanied by sonorous drums and folk chants .
It is far more than a dance carnival. It carries the Jingpo people’s ancestral legends, worship of nature, wishes for harvest, peace, solidarity and eternal ethnic inheritance.
