For many plus size people, sewing was not just a creative outlet, it was the only way we could access clothing at all. Long before brands started extending size ranges, people were learning to sew simply so they could participate in fashion like everyone else. So introducing a narrative that centres becoming smaller completely misses the point of what sewing represents for a large part of the community. Sewing is about fit, autonomy and self expression. It is not supposed to reinforce the idea that bodies need to change in order to deserve clothing. It is genuinely disappointing that an organisation within the sewing space thought this messaging was appropriate or relevant. What exactly was the goal here? Because all it has done is signal to a significant portion of their own audience that their bodies are still being positioned as problems that need solving. Plus size people are not a niche within the sewing world. We have always been a major part of it, often out of necessity rather than choice. When messaging leans into outdated skinny ideals, it does not just feel tone deaf, it actively alienates a large part of the very demographic that has historically kept sewing communities thriving. We should be moving forward, not recycling harmful narratives that suggest creativity is conditional on shrinking ourselves. Sewing should empower people to exist as they are, not imply that their worth is tied to becoming smaller.
