Britain Burned a 600-Year-Old Kingdom and Sold Its Here's your version — talking hook in Niyazov's own voice, then the story. [TALKING HOOK — Niyazov, first person] "You ask why I closed your hospitals. If a man is truly sick — let him walk to me and prove it. I renamed the month of January after myself. April, I gave my mother's name. Even the bread you eat now carries her name. I wrote a book. I laid it beside your Quran. And I dared your imams to object. I am Türkmenbaşy — father of all the Turkmen. And in my country, the sun does not dare to rise… until it has found my golden face." [NARRATION — story begins] His name was Saparmurat Niyazov. A Soviet party boss who, when the USSR collapsed in 1991, didn't just seize Turkmenistan — he became it. President. Then president for life. Every channel, every schoolbook, every wall: one face. But the worship had a price. And ordinary people paid it. In 2005, he shut every hospital outside the capital. If you're really sick, he said, come to Ashgabat. For a grandmother a full day's drive away, a treatable illness turned into a death sentence. Then he closed the libraries. Villagers don't read anyway, he said. He banned opera. Ballet. The circus. He banned beards and long hair on young men. He banned dogs from the capital — he didn't like the smell. He told his people to stop capping their teeth in gold and gnaw on bones instead, so their teeth would grow strong… like a dog's. And while the clinics went dark, the capital rose in white marble and gold. Palaces. Fountains in the middle of a desert. And a twelve-meter golden statue of himself that turned all day long, so it would always face the sun. He wrote the Ruhnama — part memoir, part scripture, part fantasy. Mandatory in every school. A question on the driving test. And to leave the country at all, you needed his blessing — which almost no one ever got. Turkmenistan became a gold-plated prison. In 2006, a heart attack did what no protest, no election, and no army ever could. It ended him. But not the cult. His successor built golden statues of himself — on horseback, on a marble cliff. And in 2022, he handed the whole country to his own son. A dynasty of mirrors. Today, Turkmenistan is still one of the most sealed-off nations on earth — a place where a dead man renamed the calendar, rewrote the holy book, and turned an entire country into a monument to himself. And somewhere, his golden statue is still turning toward the sun.
