@consulting.connoisseur: “How many coffees are sold in New York every day?” Most people overcomplicate this. The strong candidates keep it simple and structured. Start with population. NYC = c.8 million people. Now filter for adults. Assume c.75% are adults 👉 6 million adults Now coffee drinkers. Not everyone drinks coffee - assume 70% 👉 c.4 million coffee drinkers Next: frequency. Some drink 1, some 2+: Let’s assume an average c.1.5 per day 👉 c.6 million coffees from residents. But here’s what most people miss: New York isn’t just residents. You’ve got commuters + tourists. Add c.2 million people per day. Apply the same logic: 👉 c.2 million more coffees. So in total: 👉 c.8 million coffees per day. Quick sense check (this is where you stand out): c. 25k coffee shops in NYC 8m ÷ 25k = c.320 per shop per day That’s 25–30 per hour. Feels realistic. That’s how you answer it: Simple structure. Clean maths. Real-world check. Follow for more interview tips! #interview #career
But the question is about how many coffees are sold in NY every day, not how many coffees are sold in NY every day per coffee shop :)

I agree with you. However, if you’re dealing with a picky interviewer like those at BCG or Bain, they’ll ask you to justify your assumptions, such as why you estimate that 75% of the population are adults and that 70% of them drink coffee. I think you need to provide more detailed reasoning here to really impress a top interviewer.
