🎶💀 Camille Saint-Saëns – Danse Macabre, Op. 40 Eva Zavaro – solo violin 🎻 Orchestre de Paris – Julien Masmondet 🪄 • Before becoming an orchestral piece, this was a song. Saint-Saëns first wrote it for voice and piano, on a poem by his friend Henri Cazalis (a doctor by profession, a symbolist poet in his spare time). Only two years later did he decide to expand it all: he took the melody that had been sung and handed it to a solo violin. The orchestra came in underneath, with new weights and timbres. Saint-Saëns called the result a "symphonic poem," the form recently invented by Liszt that he was among the first French composers to embrace. And in that expansion, he hid an irony worth listening for. • The piece passes through the famous "Dies Irae," the Gregorian chant of the funeral liturgy. For centuries, it was the melody that accompanied every Catholic funeral in the West. Saint-Saëns placed it in the middle of Danse Macabre, distorted, now keeping company with the dancing dead. He took the sacred chant of farewell and turned it into festival music. Next time you listen to the whole piece, pay attention around the middle: the melody appears in the winds, sustained, before dissolving back into the rhythm of the dance. • Who you hear is Eva Zavaro, a Parisian with a Polish mother, trained under Julia Fischer in Munich. This was her debut at the Philharmonie de Paris, on March 3, 2021. The concert marked the centenary of Saint-Saëns's death. But the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez was empty: the pandemic had locked the audience inside their homes, and the online broadcast was the only way to listen. As the world was learning to fear death again, Zavaro stood alone on the most important stage in Paris, with the most macabre piece of the classical repertoire on her strings. The piece about Death returned to the stage the year the world started fearing it again. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • • • #violin #violinist #classicalmusic
