Pakistan: A Hard Country by Anatol Lieven is among the best introductory books on Pakistan I've ever read! As for Pakistan's history, please look into Ahmad Hassan Dani's works.

barakAllahu feek, shāndār list!! gonna add some more: 1) Muhammad Qasim Zaman's "Islam in Pakistan" to understand a sketch of Pakistani Islamic intellectual landscape. 2) GW Chaudhry's "The Last Days of United Pakistan" not because it is an accurate account of history but because it is a candid account of lived reality of a Bengali believing in the project of Pakistan and active in the establishment around Ayub and Yahya. 3) K.K. Aziz's "The Murder of History" despite its disjointed style to show how awful state led subject formation was in Pakistan. 4) Ayesha Jalal's "The Struggle for Pakistan" as an overview of Pakistani history as liberal intelligentsia sees it today. 5) Muhammad Asad's "The Principles of State and Government in Islam" written as part of Asad's work as Director of Islamic Reconstruction starting before Pakistan when he was writing Arafat and continuing under Liaquat Ali Khan, after Mirza he no longer had an audience for ideas. 6) Faridah Zaman's "The Future of Islam, 1672-1924" because it sets the stage. 7) Farzana Shaikh's " Making Sense of Pakistan" because it lays out the incoherence and what must be addressed for us to move on. Keep up the great work!!!
