You can buy the straw- it comes like one long thread and stitch the hat from scratch to save unthreading and you can pick the shape a bit more

Ok, I will definitely try this out with a black straw hat for a few € from vinted. I didn't realise that the shortening gives you so much extra width, so I was just searching for one with a wide brim.
