Training operations involving fighter jets and aircraft carriers are among the most complex military maneuvers in the world. These exercises are often referred to as Carrier Strike Group (CSG) operations. Here is an explanation of the key components of this training: 1. CATOBAR and STOBAR Operations The core of carrier training is mastering take-offs and landings. Since carrier runways are very short, special systems are used: • Catapult-Assisted Take-Off: Jets are "slung" off the deck using steam or electromagnetic catapults to reach flight speed in seconds. • Arrested Recovery (The "Trap"): To land, pilots must snag a tailhook on one of several steel wires stretched across the deck. This brings a jet traveling at 240 km/h to a complete stop in about two seconds. 2. The "Bolter" Drill Pilots must be prepared for the possibility that their hook misses the wire. During training, pilots practice "touch-and-go" maneuvers. If they miss the wire (a bolter), they must immediately apply full throttle to take off again before running out of deck space. 3. Flight Deck Ballet Training isn't just for pilots; it’s for the deck crew. The flight deck is one of the most dangerous environments in the world. Crew members wear color-coded vests to identify their roles: • Yellow: Plane Directors (handle movement). • Purple: "Grapes" (fueling). • Red: Ordnance (loading weapons/missiles). • Green: Catapult and arresting gear crews. 4. Blue Water Operations This training involves operating far out at sea, out of range of any land-based runways. This forces pilots to master Aerial Refueling (tanking) and perfect their navigation, as there is no "Plan B" if they cannot find the carrier. 5. Joint Exercises (Multi-National) Carriers often participate in large-scale drills like RIMPAC or Cope Tiger. These exercises simulate high-intensity combat, including: • Dogfighting (ACM): Air Combat Maneuvers against other jets. • Strike Missions: Simulating attacks on sea or land targets. • Electronic Warfare: Training to jam enemy radar and defend the ship.
