The trees would have died naturally because they had been artificially planted by humans as tree plantations. They cut them because they where most likely affected by a type of a bug parasite that is an invasive species out of Canada. The forests where mostly monocultures because after the war they needed wood so the bug can infest large areas that then need to be cut because the bug destroyed the trees.
