Average CIO tenure is less than 5 years. A new CIO is typically brought in to be a change agent and/or to improve compliance. By the time they evaluate current state, look for solutions, make purchase decisions and implement- they are on to their next role. Do they leave because their project is failing / about to fail? Or because have they been put through the wringer by consultants? Or because the rest of the c-staff has also churned and nobody knows what problem they started to try and solve 4 years ago

a huge contributor to IT/Bus misalignment is that IT doesn't trust users of the system. just as you're saying IT roles have evolved, so has every other role and many non IT staff are highly knowledgeable about technology, system updates, projects, etc. but when IT thinks a new system is needed the rest of the org is treated like toddlers who don't know what is good for them. contracts get signed that sound good to IT leadership and everyone has to deal with the fallout

I'm on the "champion" team for UAT for a software rewrite that a 3rd party vendor is doing for a major platform we use. They did discovery years ago but the lead developer checked in almost daily at the beginning of the project to validate that things were being developed in a way that aligned with daily use on the end user side. Then he left and visibility to the project disappeared. I'm beyond frustrated now that the end product is nearly finished and it's too late to make changes as we begin to see what's being rolled out and that some things are missing the mark.

IT driving their tech agenda (solution looking for a problem) instead of business and industry need. Then the gap between IT and business driven by lack of shared language and knowledge to get solid requirements, risk tolerance, etc. I do believe an AI enabled intelligence infrastructure could help companies finally close that gap…if they first acknowledge the gap exists.

How about when leadership approves a contract of a shiny new system, but don’t want to get people to install or upgrade them? Licenses are not enough if you need to maintain your own infrastructure 🤦🏻♀️
