@markus_marthaler: Most swimmers think a bigger kick means more propulsion. What’s often overlooked is that beyond a certain point, kicking bigger creates more drag than it produces thrust. Every time the foot travels outside the shadow of the body, it is exposed to the full resistance of the water. A small, narrow kick keeps the feet within the body’s slipstream for most of their travel. A wide, deep kick drives the feet out into open water on every stroke, acting like a brake applied at the back of the body while the arms are trying to pull forward. Research and coaching consensus are consistent on this: the optimal kick amplitude is smaller than most swimmers expect, roughly the width of the body and no more than around 30 centimetres of total vertical travel. Beyond that, drag increases faster than propulsion, which means the extra effort produces less speed, not more. Kicking harder in that wide range just costs more energy for diminishing return. The same principle applies to knee bend. A large knee bend during the downbeat creates a significant frontal surface that catches water directly. The kick should originate from the hip with only a slight natural give at the knee, not a deliberate bend. A swimmer kicking from the knees is essentially dragging two paddles facing forward on every stroke. The cue used by many coaches is to imagine kicking inside a bucket, or to think about rubbing the big toes past each other. Both create the sensation of a contained, compact kick that stays within the body’s line. Technical fact: Flutter kick amplitude beyond the body’s shadow increases drag faster than it increases propulsion. An optimal kick is narrow, hip-driven, and compact, with minimal knee bend. Larger kicks cost more energy while producing less net forward speed. Kick smaller to go faster. The water does not reward effort that fights against itself.

Yup. Exactly that. Beautiful stroke. Smooth. Streamlined in the water. Horizontal on top of the water with no vertical drag. Perfect breathing to side. 👍🔥
