I love that “June” in the book isn’t a clean slate and is actually written like a person with her background would respond by default in the book. I think the show wanted to feel a lot more hopeful where the book was very much an excerpt of what a future like this could look like

I kind of wish the series spent a lot more time on the before, not just flashbacks, but actual episodes of how it got there and people being like "oh it's not gonna last" like Luke said early on

This is why I tell people. Please watch the original movie. If you don't want to read the book. It really got the core meaning of it. Especially because they had TV.

Yes, I read the book first and was disappointed that the TV series did not rise to the challenge - didn't want to make audiences too uncomfortable?

this comentary is so important. i remember talking about it in my book club(so long ago). and then watching the show, i felt like i was remembering wrong or something. i should re-read it and i heard that the movie is better than series. idk. i appreciate your insight. i have learned more listening to Black, Indigenous, and other Women of Color that i could ever learn from my own experience.

how did people not relate June to Harriet Tubman when in the end of BOTH books (the handmaid's tale and the testaments) they refer to June's work with smuggling women as an underground railroad like was that not obvious..?

i feel like it’s also important to remember that Gilead is only the united states on the show. in the book, it’s never mentioned what country it is. i always imagined it being western europe when i read it, mostly just because it was easy to slot into germany in my head

And we know this was intentional on Atwood's part because she's repeatedly stated that everything she wrote in Gilead had already happened somewhere at some point in time

I know this isn’t the point, but if they made Harriet tubmans story into a tense drama, I would 100% watch it.
