The comments are totally missing the point. Yes it’s beneficial to have parents as doctors and families that have more resources. However, med students that make it without that type of access should be definitely be recognized and praised

Very defensive people in the comments. I am a senior pre-med coming from a middle high family. Neither are physicians. My college is paid for, I don’t have to work multiple jobs while in college. I am privileged to be able to have resources others do not have. I wish we had more doctors from different backgrounds, I think it would make physicians so much more empathetic and human.

What is the point of this post? Those that have “privilege” still have to work hard and it’s still an accomplishment for getting to medical school. Obviously you should have compassion for those who are not as lucky but that doesn’t mean taking away compassion for those that are luckier.

No one also talks about how hard it is to get non-medical, 1st-gen family to understand the process and struggle of medicine. My parents thought that I'd just be done after medical school, they don't understand why I can't just take vacation to visit home, they don't understand the burnout or the amount of debt I'm in. I'm a PM&R resident and they still don't know what that is despite my explanations. Nepotism also helps not make this journey so lonely.

I’m a member of that resilience club. I absolutely had no idea what I’m doing. Struggled in every aspect but by the grace of God, I always continue to move forward.

I wish some truly understood the privilege that comes with that. Both my parents are doctors and I have grown up with almost everything you have mentioned because they were interested in teaching me about their passion and it became mine. I’m going for PA not MD however the idea of the resources i have access to is the same. You’re absolutely not demonizing those who do have access and spreading a very important message about the inequality in medicine. It absolutely needs to be talked about more! Especially with how many opportunities are being jeopardized with the restrictions to student loans for many women-dominated medical professions!
