in the book Grace is shown as a coward - when he was in space gaining his memories back he thought he signed up for a sacrificial mission himself. He thought he was brave and rocky would even keep saying “we are brave!” But when he remembers how he ended up in space he remembers Stratt calling him out hard. His refusal for any relationships bc he was afraid of getting hurt, him giving up on his thesis after pushback from the scientific community, and then refusing to go save humanity. He knew he would die but he at least thought it was his own choice. It was soul crushing knowing he didn’t want any of it but in the end he risks everything to save rocky remembering how much of a coward he is. His character came full circle and was so beautifully written

I am of the belief the "I don't have the bravery gene you all have", "sure you do, you just need to find someone to be brave for" is a reference to the scene in the book where he doesn't know he has the "coma resistance" gene until commander yuo tells him.
