it is just such crazy work to go into a book knowing exactly who lives and dies, and some version of how it ends, and have it still be the most moving, gripping thing I've ever read

She wanted to talk about propaganda so this was the only story that worked (since it was the only one we “knew”). My issue is that I don’t buy the timeline. I’m sorry, does she really want me to believe that the Capitol hasn’t figured out how to run the Games smoothly after 50 years? 40 since Snow started glorifying them. Come on. The Arena almost feels like it should’ve been the 25th Games (because they’re getting good at it but there are kinks in the systems). But I do not believe that they have so little control by Games 50.

This is why I'm wondering how they are going to play off the real games vs the capitol edited version in the film since we were missing that scene from Catching Fire

I read Sunrise and then did an entire series reread, first time reading HG with a frontal lobe, and yeah.. the amount of information we already had about his Games that was hidden or glossed over in the OG trilogy was so neat to find!

She told us that everything was propaganda, and we were still surprised to find out that it was propaganda. Collins is a genius.

I went into this knowing their fate. I kept screaming no at the book like haymitch would hear me. (much like my mom screams at the football players during game)

I had to read the reaping scene about 3 or 4 times when Haymitch’s name wasn’t called. I was confused beyond comprehension. I knew how Maysilee died, even watched the fan movie to know how gruesome it’d be, and knew it was Mutts. I wasn’t prepared for it to have been a direct attack from game makers because she full on killed a game maker in the arena. I knew about Haymitch and the force field and thought, “Snow killed his family because he outsmarted Snow.” I wasn’t prepared for Haymitch to embark on plotted mission to destroy the arena. I was SHOCKED when I read Plutarch’s name, and further shocked when I learned how close his family was with Snow

and even then he wasn't even telling her the full truth because the forcefield had virtually nothing to do with why they were murdered.

she mentions in the first book "they probably arent showing this" "they are probably cut away right now because we are discussing life in different districts" and I even think she mentions her games being slightly changed outside of that. it would make sense people have done things in the past the capitol wouldnt want people to see. I feel like the first book told us the games werent always what they appeared. I also imagine after Mockingjay the installed government went back and watched the unedited games they had (im assuming gauls vault was a continued tradition) to see what people really did in the games. the other acts of rebellion or moments a person deserved to have seen or acknowledged.

Reading catching fire, you get the idea that Haymitch is really smart, leading Silka to the edge and having the weapon come back at her being part of the plan when in actuality, it was his last effort to still try and finish his plan and he literally just passed out and got lucky that the weapon came back and hit her. We also didn’t find out that he won and was still trying to break the arena even being yelled at by the gamemakers stop SO GOOOD

I read catching fire and thought fuck ending the trilogy LETS IMMEDIATELY DO HAYMITCH STORY 💪🏾! Only to realize I was in for a shock and the shortened capital propaganda I believed from catching fire was all lies. The feed was fake (ex: “haymitch has some struggles of his own when he discovers the squirrels are carnivorous” which is really him trying to save Ampert but cut in a way to hide the horrific fact. Another example is seeing the game from someone’s perspective but you never know that’s Lou Lou until the book 😭😭). The only part that’s real is how Haymitch beat Silka but otherwise you are deceived entirely from his reaping to the very ending. Haymitch even watches his games behind Peeta and Katniss silently and doesn’t spoil anything to them. Reading it now you realize Haymitch is such a more complex and endearing character and why he bonds so well to Katniss on a mental and emotional level immediately (trauma speaks volumes to other trauma victims). I always liked his character but I definitely appreciated him more by the end of this book.
