note that this discrepancy was always there - it just used to be different companies selling maps in India and in Pakistan with the different Kashmir borders. what's changed is that now one company serves both highly opinionated markets

Gulf of Mexico naming is a slightly different issue than disputed borders. One is an international body of water not belonging to anyone. The other is territory multiple claim. The dotted lines make sense for disputed territory, and international water should use one internationally recognized name

Maps have always done these sorts of things; at a fundamental level, there is the language the map is displayed in, which changes the names of countries (for example)

not me in the USA trying to find the island of Crete on Google maps and having a heck of a time because they labeled it in Greek (Kriti). Which not very consistent when they labeled the nation as "Greece" and not "Hellas".

Its bizzare they show gulf of America outside the US, after all, in Portuguese it shows, for example, "Turkey" as Turquia, the Portuguese name, and not "Turkiye".

Google also labels Native American territories in terms of where they were displaced to and rarely where they originated from. It’s hard to understand the motive/logic there because it certainly isn’t for the tribe’s benefit
