My son is 7, and begins with a “no thanks” and ends with a “do you find words tricky? No means no.” 😂😂😂

I think British politeness doesn't help us where we don't want to disappoint people! But absolutely children(and everyone) shouldn't feel pressured to hug someone they don't want to!💗

I’m a reception teacher and we have been learning the boundaries song in school this week, the children love it! Yesterday one of the children said to their mum ‘I don’t want a kiss mum’ and I explained to mum that we have been learning we can say ‘please stop’ if we don’t want to do something🫶🏻

my nieces react to me this way sometimes but I spot it and go no? okay what about a high five or a wave? and they tend to choose whatever is most comfortable for them. it isnt about how much they love someone its just how they feel that day and thats okay! (least in our situ)

Most of my family are huggers and I don’t think I’ve ever been keen but now I really dislike it and find it fake🥲

childrens voices struggle to be heard as it is, you're absolutely doing the right thing advocating for them. I'm sure it's not a case of you immediately step in and instead probably observe whether the girls can handle it themselves. I'm sure they'd tell you if they wanted you to not step in for them! What you do for them is brilliant ✨

I love that you do show them they don’t have to… I grew up in a family where you had to give hugs especially if they were to other family members because it was “respectful” and now as an adult I don’t like giving people hugs you have to be really special in my life to get one

If you teach them now, that their body is sacred and belongs to nobody but them.. it will hopefully help them when they start dating, to advocate and not people please. We all needed this lesson as kids and we never got it. You’re a good mother 🩷

I really hope this is something that dissappears with our generation and the next ones, previous gens would find it so rude to not hug an adult when asked, but for us it's about giving the child respect too, I would never force bodily contact with any child so I hope future gens of children don't find this as hard as an adult will respect their decision upon the first refusal/choice ❤️(I live with enormous hope!)

I do this with my kids, when we leave somewhere I do say go give kisses and hugs and say bye but if they don't want too.. I then suggest do you want to do a fist bump, hi 5, or nothing and if its nothing that's fine with me 😁

You’re so right, so many people don’t respect a child’s no. We’ve taught my daughter to say ‘please respect my no’ which seems to be working so far as it’s quite jarring to be confronted about consent by a 3 year old 😂

No you’re so right realistically SOME adults are SO pushy one older relative gets visibly annoyed when I say “if you don’t want to hug we can do a high five” when my toddlers don’t want to hug/kiss her 😂

My wee niece is only 18 months old, but if she doesn't want to give me a cuddle, then she absolutely doesn't have to! I ask her, "do you want up/a cuddle?" and always follow it up with, "it's ok if you don't!" because it is always, always her choice and it's my job as an adult to respect that, and as her aunt, to protect her.

It used to give me the absolute fear when older relatives would try to kiss me , I’d turn my head so they could land on my cheek 🤣

the worst thing is when an adult will ask a child for a cuddle and then say "I'll cry mind" if they don't get one 😡🤬 all 3 of my children are autistic and touch and affection just isn't always on their radar. I hated being forced as a child to give Aunts and Uncles cuddles, I am undiagnosed autistic (waiting for assessment) and late diagnosed adhd.

I say this when were leaving relatives houses it's there choice to give kiss and cuddles goodbye. we wouldn't do it as an adult so why force the child. The in-laws never get it
