@kaylatheshow: All of these conversations are important. But please let one happen at a time. I talk about representation for everyone. But if we bundle them all together they can get lost. #disney #representationmatters #disneyprincess
It shouldn’t be a “what about”. It should be yes, AND. Conversations CAN be more inclusive but should not dismiss what brought it to the table in the first place, it’s dismissive! Let the conversation breathe and take in what the topic is. I understand wanting it to be relatable by experience but at the end of the day they are still not the same! Much respect to you and your platform ❤️

one thing my mama always taught me was: let them speak their cause before you. if you're called in, you can say it. if not, start your own speech instead of dismissing theirs.

Whataboutism is almost always used to shut down discussions when it fact opening doors and representation to one group can only help other groups also get representation and doors open. When we see the variety in human experience, we see it as normal and good.

Is there a respectful way to do this? Is it better to just keep the conversations really split? This comment isn’t meant to be rude at all. Just wondered yours and others opinions on this. I know I’ve been guilty in the past of saying “I think I feel a portion of that frustration as a disabled person that doesn’t get much positive representation”. I think that’s not the right response but I wondered what might be better when trying to discuss black representation respectfully and intersectionality or other issues. I seriously hope this isn’t a rude way to ask!

people need to understand that just because someone is speaking about one thing doesn't mean they dont care about other important things

And it also ignores you can be black and queer, black and disabled, black and mixed. We need more black representation in EVERY way

That makes perfect sense. It is such a nuanced way (at times) of disregarding the whole point of your topic.

I can completely understand this perspective and other groups needing to be seen doesn't diminish this. however if we are looking at Disney movies they are a limited resource and particularly when looking at racial representation (as opposed to queer, disabled etc) you can't stack them. I also think that while this is something that should have been addressed ages ago looking back 100 years is not super representative of the current state of the company.
to be clear none of this suggests that these issues should eclipse the conversation you are having.

I think you should cover these topics too! I really like how you cover these topics and the more content you make the more traffic it will direct towards your videos about black rep.

Exactly like we can have a conversation about something else and not direct it to another. Yes there are so many things that need to be spoken about but we shouldn’t be upset when someone talks about a minority that need representation as well. There’s so many conversations that we can have but aren’t needed at all the same time

Excatly!! We wouldn’t have the ada without black people leading the civil rights movement bc the protests leading to the creation of the ada was DIRECTLY INSPIRED by the civil rights movement!!

also there's no max representation, we can make more characters, there's not a finite number

Why does everyone feel the need to turn their right to be seen, heard and represented into a “who can shout the loudest”. Instead of tryna drown each other out we should be combining our voices so it can’t be ignored. No “me first” mentality, maybe let’s fight for and with each other to make a better media landscape for EVERYONE.
