The trick is to read the two star reviews. If it’s a coherent, well written, take down of the book, trust it. If it contains multiple all caps sentences saying things like “boring, no plot” “dnf” “too confusing” you’re about to read one of the greatest books ever written

it's so hard to gauge a book's quality via goodreads because a book will have a 4.75 average rating on there and then the top 10 reviews will all be one star

i used to know immediately whether i'd enjoy something based on the reviews and now i'm forced to wade through a swamp of subpar witticisms just to get to reviews that are based on feelings instead of craft like huh?? the deterioration of goodreads has been devastating

Honestly the safest way to find a good book is to find users with a similar taste and check out the things they rate highly. The comments on popular books are a good way to find people
