tbh I don't understand pain scales in general. it should either be based on the impact of the pain, like how much you can function (so how much it hurts is actually irrelevant), or it should be a scale comparing only similar types of pain and only really ones you've personally experienced. for example, I might have a scale for my migraines/headaches, where 10 is the worst migraine I've ever had and 1 is like barely any pain. that makes sense. but I'm not gonna compare the pain of a migraine to like back pain or something. cause those are completely different.

My dad (ER doc) always asks “rate your pain 1-10, with 10 being the worst pain you’ve ever experienced” so that’s always how I’ve thought of the scale. You can only know your own experience

As someone with chronic pain I found a labeled pain scale on Google and I show people when I reference it and even my ex looked at it and said “oh wow well going by this, the most pain I’ve ever experienced is like a 3”

If I’m telling my this to a doctor, I need to give them a number that makes sense to them, not me. Why would I give them a number based on my personal pain scale? That’s not clear. Not everyone thinks that way?

Also, are we talking intensity, or duration? It could also be a combination of the two, however no single scale covers both.

I think measuring based off of ur experiences makes more sense. saying ur pain is a 10 means it's like the worst pain u ever felt
