I get where you’re coming from but disagree on the name drop. It’s all in how you utilize it. I was early Lowes.com (my team released the 1.0 iOS app) and mentioning the brand helped my business in lots of ways (including an investor that has tripled already healthy revenue in months). It’s how you frame it — lead with your expertise in operational efficiency and offer “access” to your experiences and successes at *cough* big .com *cough* without letting the convo turning to a different offer (“help us setup our Etsy!”)… Noooooooo … I’ll help your exiting operation maximize efficiency … or etc. just my POV but if you have the right BOUNDARIES I’ve found the name drop (which let’s be real it’s an earned name drop you did work there) can work for YOU.

I totally understand this. Early in my career I thought name dropping was “cool” and now I try to avoid it at all costs 😂

Love the live building!! Hard to balance the experience vs what you want to offer. Use the “value of the company” aka size etc. Are you helping me in my corporate ops job? Or ops for what I’m building outside corp? Just say big tech company (maybe some metrics too w/o the name).

This is great learnings! It’s helpful to have a known name but at the same time if it’s detracting from your value then I agree, anonymize it! You still have the skillset. The plus for my 9-5 is it’s not a household name so it’s easy to say “manufacturing company”

Also take some form of payment upfront. $2,000 retainer to “explore/discovery” and then upsell the engagement from there. Pick a number that covers your time and energy

Also second thought for you — try to work with businesses doing 500,000 revenue or above right out of the gate. Or smaller if they are funded / high cash reserves. Otherwise you’re working with people trying to “get a deal” and won’t pay great. 1-10Mill revenue with manufacturers …
