No issue so long as you don’t claim to have read the book, say you listened to it. It’s just accurate and nothing to be ashamed of. People gain social status by stating the “read” something.

I think it only matters for kids that are literally still learning how to read. As long as you’re absorbing the content, listening is fine.

Question to people who say "just say listening because its about the definition of words." If I were to say in a conversation "im writing my essay on my laptop," would you stop me and say "no you are TYPING your essay," or would you carry on because the definition isn't important. And there was most likely a time where the definition of writing expanded to include the action of typing. Language has never and will never be a static thing

depends on the context. Are you just trying to experience the story? audiobooks are great!
Are you trying to improve your reading ability? (like someone that's in school) audiobooks are pretty bad for that.

I swear it's people who get competitive about books read in a year and get butt hurt about audios feeling like they "padded their numbers" with audios. meanwhile like you said there IS NO competition. this is jsut me tracking books as I please lol

This! I also see a lot of “do rereads count?” Count for what?? You’re not being graded. There’s no rules. Do whatever you want!

I switch between reading a paperback, reading on my phone, and listening to audio, all in the same book. Does that mean I cheated on 1/3 of the book? 🙄

Yes!! Same with when people ask are we counting rereads, or are we counting novellas/short stories? “We” all need to just read whatever and however makes us happy and stop caring what everyone else is doing

Audiobooks count as reading. Comic books count as reading. Graphic novels count as reading. Manga count as reading. Braille count as reading.

Our ancestors didn't pass down oral histories and traditions for a more than a millenia for us to say audiobooks don't count.

They're just mad that we can consume the same media and do other things at the same time. Sorry babes, Joe Arden is in my ears while I wash dishes.
on a serious note, something in my brain broke a couple years ago and I can no longer physically read books like I used to. Audiobooks saved me. It processes through my brain in the same way reading a physical book used to. So yeah. It's reading.

the hill I will die on is listening is the equivalent of looking. and reading is a cognitive function not a sensory function

I do immersion reading I read and listen. So does it mean when I put the book down and go and vacuum or do the dishes and I'm still listening to the book I'm not reading it? I'm just continuing my reading.

exactly. this includes the people that say speeding up audiobooks is cheating because huh? as someone with adhd, listening to it at the "normal" speed makes it impossible for me pay attention. honestly, i think that people take the yearly reading goals as a challenge against everyone else and not just a goal you're setting for yourself that has nothing to do with anyone else.

I think this argument exists in the context of social media where people are posting their personal metrics and, inevitably, comparing and measuring themselves up against others. As someone who DOES believe that audiobooks “count” as reading, I believe there should be some acknowledgment that it IS different listening to 20 audiobooks in a month (which you can do while multi-tasking) vs reading 4-5 physical or e-books in a month (which requires you to be stationary). Of course, the competition is imagined and there are no REAL stakes, but I think this lack of acknowledgement from audiobook defenders is why the argument consistently comes up

Reading is a cognitive skill. It can be completed through various sensory inputs. Audio, visual, tactile… these are all ways to access a text. The reading part happens in the brain. All reading is valid reading!

Nah it’s the people who listen at 1.75+ speed. How slow is your narrator at 1.0 that you need to double or even triple the speed.
