Question: are the different cuts planned for in the script or at some point in filming? I assumed you’d somewhat need to know so you can film all the different parts you’d need for certain cuts. Or is it all left up to the editor’s discretion during post-production?

That match cut in 2001 is infuriating cos it doesn’t happen when the bone and the ship are in the same orientation (unlike your stills) but maybe a frame or two later. Given how much of a perfectionist Kubrick was I’ve never understood why it wasn’t better matched…

A jump cut isn’t cutting from an restaurant to inside the restaurant. That’s just a cut. A jump cut it is what happens in the Dune clip though. There’s a sudden change in the image, where some part of the image appears or disappears without seeing the physical movement of that object or person. It’s usually a scene shot from the same setup, jumping in time.
