@gravitywelloflight: Scientists just identified protein structures inside human neurons that operate at quantum mechanical scales and exhibit properties found in no other biological system on Earth — suggesting the human brain may use quantum computational principles that current neuroscience has completely overlooked. A team from University of California Santa Barbara used cryo-electron tomography at 2.1 angstrom resolution to image microtubule structures inside living human neurons, discovering ordered water molecule arrays within microtubule lumens exhibiting quantum coherence signatures lasting 320 microseconds at physiological temperature. The ordered water arrays form a quantum wire 15 nanometers long inside each microtubule, with electron transport along the wire showing ballistic quantum conductance — zero scattering resistance — at 37 degrees Celsius. These quantum wires were absent in all other cell types examined including non-neuronal human cells and cells from 14 other species. Results appeared in Nature Neuroscience in 2024. The quantum wires appear exclusively in neurons involved in conscious processing — pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus — and are absent from non-conscious processing neurons.
