I need help. My grandfather's estate was stolen from us — and the attorney who did it is still walking free.
My grandfather was the only guardian my siblings and I had left after we lost both our parents. When he passed, we did what we thought was right — we hired an attorney to help us finalise his estate. That was 2022.
Some funds were paid out to us, and the attorney was paid his fees as agreed. But there's still R140,000 outstanding — money that belonged to us, from our late grandfather's estate.
The attorney then confessed at the LPC that he used that money for his own business.
I reported him to the Legal Practice Council (LPC). Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty, and the LPC found him guilty — even stating they're concerned about how many other victims may be out there. He promised to pay back the funds.
He still hasn't paid a cent.
I sent him a deadline to return the money. He blocked me. I went to his office to follow up — he told me to "make an appointment" to discuss money he already owes us and has already admitted to taking.
Since then, I've lost my job. I spent what little I had trying to get to Protea Court to open a case against him. I'm now in debt. I can't pay rent. I can't pay my son's school fees. Some days I can't put food on the table for my child.
Meanwhile, I've watched him carry on with his life and his practice as if nothing happened.
I can't afford another attorney right now. I've already lost too much trying to get back what's rightfully ours.
If you know what legal steps I can still take from here — Small Claims Court, the Sheriff of the Court, LPC enforcement/Fidelity Fund options, pro bono legal help, or anything else — please reach out or share this post. I need to get this money back for my family.
🙏🏽 Any advice, contacts, or shares are deeply appreciated.
