I must reread Bleak House. It’s been years but I could not put it down and scenes from it are still imprinted in my mind.

I'm reading in 5 languages. Right now, I'm reading a book in Dutch that was translated in English and longlisted for the international Booker prize, 'The Remembered Soldier' by Anjet Daanje. Also about 800 pages, but very good

In a similar way. I love Shakespeare but I've never read Romeo and Juliet nor have I seen the play. I'll have to remedy that someday. The Great Gatsby was really easy for me to read. Fitzgerald was just such a masterful writer in my humble opinion and I have to be very humble because I'm not a literature student. I'm desperately afraid of any literature teacher that carries around a red pen, so please don't criticize my grammar, LOL.

I’ve never read the Bleak House but I did see a video of someone who read War and Peace in a year. She read a chapter a day in order to get through it, annotate it, take her time with it, live in it and not get overwhelmed by the size nor writing style. Maybe give yourself 6 months or whatever timeline you decide so you don’t feel like you have to push through it or like you have to give up.

"Bleak House" is probably more effective than "Hard Times" in its depiction of poverty. Most certainly finish it. Dickens himself was an unpleasant husband. You might find interesting "Parallel Lives: Five Victorian Marriages" by Phyllis Rose which describes Dickens' marriage. Fitzgerald's short stories are interesting. His wife Zelda was a fascinating woman. There's a balcony in Verona that claims to be the actual scene of Juliet's plea. 😂

I know for me personally I was just out of college and working for a law firm and bleak house kind of resonated so I think I kind of enjoyed it. (I didn't get as much literature in with my other major subjects so I was trying to play catch-up at the time) wishing you well on your journey

one quibble I have with Bleak House is that Esther bursts into tears way to often. I think you could put it aside if you are making excuses not to read it. I recently finished Nicholas Nickleby, and thoroughly enjoyed it(although tears abound here as well).

Don't give up on Bleak House. I'm reading it for the 2nd time. I've watched both BBC versions. They are both miniseries.

Wow! You’re an inspiration! 😍 I’m having such a hard time with “Madame Bovary.” 😳 It took me 1 year to finish “Pride and Prejudice.” I should have just DNF’ed. 🤣😍♥️
