Mom to mom, the core issue is being around each other 24/7. At 7 she should be forming her own friendships, extracurriculars etc. but she’s putting that social energy into pleasing you since it’s just the 2 of you. Consistent separation will help her to blossom & will gives you time to just BE and regulate yourself.

how about implementing small things like her making her own lunch, and her folding her own laundry, and her doing her own hair. and then not critiquing it or going behind her to tweak it at all. and then asking her “ if she is proud of herself” rather than saying you are so proud of her!

As an only child raised by a single mother with ADHD this 100% sounds like my mom and I when I was younger 😭. Do not be afraid of discipline, that feeling does not last forever it’s only for the moment. I promise it won’t make her dislike you (maybe for a couple hours lol) but it won’t be the end of the world and she’ll understand that it’s coming from a place of love ❤️

You sound like such a wonderful and considerate mom. Would you consider having her do something other than homeschool?

do you ever ask her these questions that you wonder? I know she’s young but she’s also beyond her years. I almost feel that some of these questions could be a dialogue with her and give you a lot of insight of how she sees you and be a teachable and assuring moment for both.

As someone who is very close with my mom. My mom was my disciplinarian and best friend. She is very open, understanding for me and shows up 110 percent, but she also made sure i understood structure, right from wrong etc. made sure i understood boundaries and that she need her time. that didn’t push me further away. Made me understand her and boundaries in general. don’t beat yourself up you got this💞

As a family therapist, With relationships even with children the best thing to do is to debrief and repair. It doesn’t have to be after every situation it can be a check in after 3 days or at the end of the week. “From my perspective we’ve had a rough couple of days and I don’t like how I’ve reacted” Let her respond and take her own accountability. Talk about how you both can do better than end with warmth. Gradually it will become apart of your routine naturally. Kids are so simple. She loves you without bounds and forgives you every time. you both just need to talk about it so you both feel heard and seen.

Therapist here (mama too) You don’t have to try to summarize her entire life’s experience and memories into one singular interaction or a singular day. You also cannot predict the future or read her future mind. That’s a ton of pressure to be putting on yourself and no wonder you start to feel overwhelmed. I’ve been following you for a while and although I know we don’t see all the little moments we see the big picture and you’re doing a phenomenal job. Cadence will also remember the big picture as well. You will never be the perfect mother or the perfect person but you will always be a PRESENT mother and that counts for so much. Do what’s needed to get through the day and regulate as best as you can in the moment. & when you’re ready reflect individually and with her on a plan that works better for you. You’ve got this. It truly is day by day.

My Mom struggled with this as a single parent, she later realized she couldn't parent from a place of guilt! Discipline isn't neglect, or mistreatment, it's guidance. Despite any form of discipline I received, my Mom loved me 1000% more. Today, we're absolute besties, conjoined at the hip, I want to crawl into her skin and live there at my big age of 25 lol. The way you are with your babygirl, it's literally a reflection of my Mama and I, and I promise you created a strong foundation. There's no breaking that!

You are seen and heard. I will not leave a comment with advice or suggestions. Sometimes we just want to let our thoughts out, so from one momma in the same boat to another.. you are seen and heard 🤍

Honestly, remember you’re the parent. Once my son said he didn’t like me when I told him off I had to explain that’s it’s okay it doesn’t stop me from being your mum. Explaining that I’m human has helped too. Using examples of when they are throwing tantrums so they understand it happens to everyone. I also ask him for breaks when I’m overstimulated. She’s smart and you’ve done so well raising her just express it in the easiest way.

As a homeschooling Mom of an 8 year old, this is so relatable. I am working so hard to undo my daughter's people-pleasing tendencies. It's rough.

I think you’re not giving you or her enough credit. Humans have the capacity to step back and look at the big picture. 2 things can be true at once, you might be the meany that snapped at her when you were overstimulated/tired, but you’re also the mom that would give her ANYTHING including your life for her to be okay.. and she knows that. Think about when she’s not the nicest to you when she’s grumpy, you don’t freeze her in time and consider her as only a mean child, you know she’s just not feeling it that day/moment. She needs to see that you’re the same & not perfect, you have bad days/moments too (without expecting her to emotionally regulate you) express to her that you’re not okay and it’s okay not to be okay sometimes, that way she feels that about herself and her emotions too and it creates a safe space for both of yall to feel real human feelings. Also for most people pleasing is a mostly innocent inadvertent way to try to control the other person <—— read that again 🩵🩵🩵 you 2 are some of my favorite humans to watch on this app and I’m single, no kids. It’s okay not to be okay mama, you got this 🩵

As a libra we need balance to survive. As a neurodivergent we for sure need structure. Without both it's chaos. I have this exact dynamic with a Sagittarius baby. It's real out here sista. 😭

You need you just as much as she needs you. I’m the only parent too, and it’s exhausting trying to make sure I don’t add to the childhood trauma the other parent’s absence may already be creating. I’ve found comfort in realizing that even when I have to discipline him or take a break to reset, that doesn’t make me a bad parent, it actually shows that I’m a good one. Only a good parent worries about getting it right, about protecting their child’s emotional well-being, and about taking care of themselves so they can keep showing up with patience, love, and stability over and over again, ALONE.
