Yup. Most Mexicans are mestizos, and mestizos are descended from indigenous people. But the bitter truth is that they are for a large part detribalized and hispanicized, by no fault of their own. There is nothing wrong with reconnecting, in fact I think we as indigenous people who are connected with our cultures should encourage it. That said, I feel like the blanket statement that all Mexicans are indigenous has lead to a lot of that phenomenon where every Mexican is convinced they are descended from the Aztecs lol. And it’s made it so people are forgetting that ‘Mexican’ is just as colonial of an identity as ‘American’. I say this as someone who is indigenous and chicana.

I am considered half mexican but my Dads side of the family is really indigenous to Texas. We came from the Coahuiltecan tribe settled in southern Texas and north eastern Mexico. Then records show my family being a big part Corpus Cristi (my dad is from there) becoming a city so they have literally always been there.
