Here is how I understand it. the early birds gets the bird, meaning the one who acts first gets the W, but also it happens that the second mouse get the cheese meaning the first mouse went with the same motives as the early bird but got trapped in the mouse trap, then its other foe( second mouse) got the cheese. all this means that its not about being first or second to have a successful attempt but about being lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time
