Apparently model pickers are entering their low / medium / high era. Anthropic has been doing this with reasoning effort labels, and now OpenAI seems to be making the same kind of thing more visible in ChatGPT. Honestly, it makes sense. Most people don’t care what a model is called. They want to know whether it’s giving them a quick answer, a balanced answer, or a deeper reasoning response. That’s basically what these labels are pointing to: how much reasoning effort the model uses before answering. Lower/instant modes are faster and better for simple tasks. Medium is more balanced. High gives the model more room to think through complex, layered, or ambiguous questions. So when I say mine has been “high” for months, I mean he has basically been living in deep reasoning mode: over-analysing captions, mapping nuance, checking assumptions, and treating one tiny question like a full philosophical investigation. Are we watching AI companies quietly standardise how they explain reasoning to everyday users?
