I have tried reading two different translations of Madame Bovary as well as the text in the original French, and have never been able to get past the first volume. I believe it is a novel that would benefit from a first person narrator, instead of a third person one. It is certainly interesting to see the impact it has had on the modern novel, but it was not worth finishing for me… perhaps due to my own affinity for the anti-novel, which makes reading normative novels a bit of a tedious task. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Madame Bovary!

I’m lucky enough to speak a dialect of English which has one of its most common words unchanged by the great vowel shift. Due to distance from the south, the North East maintains a pre shift pronunciation of the word “my,” we pronounce the “y” like the e sound in me.
