@jennyotsuki: Is "slow eating" the norm in Japan? 🍰🇯🇵 👀 I’ve noticed that in Tokyo cafes, it’s totally normal to spend 3+ hours savoring a tiny meal. Don't get me wrong—I can easily sit with a coffee for 1–2 hours, but when it comes to food, I’m done in 30 minutes! I just can't sit there and nibble for 4 hours without ever actually feeling full. 😅 Are you a slow, "savor every bite" person, or are you impatient like me? 👇✨ _______ #tokyolife #lifeinjapan #cultureshock #japantravel #slowliving Keywords: Japanese Cafe Culture, Living in Tokyo 2026, Observation Vlog Japan, Slow Eating Habits, Tokyo Lifestyle, Expat in Japan, Japanese Social Norms, Funny Japan Vlog, Tokyo Dessert Spots, Cultural Differences Japan

I think this is about unhealthy relationships with food and not wanting to gain weight by eating too many sugary things … but I may be wrong

Japanese people have a culture of eating with chopsticks, so they are accustomed to eating in small portions. Therefore, it can be unpleasant to see foreign tourists in Japan opening their mouths wide, sticking out their tongues, and stuffing large amounts of food into their mouths at once.

It’s because when you’re finished eating, you can’t just stay and relax, they will ask you to leave to accommodate other customer

I live in Japan and have yet to see someone take an hour or more to finish dessert lol. Most people do bring something with them to do at the cafe tho so it's not just eating quick and leaving, but rather reading, talking, etc.

I love the concept of slow cafe culture. In Europe (Switzerland) I feel so much to pressure to eat quickly and staff try to take my drinks before I have even finished 🥺

Well, it's more about what your intention is. if you're there to eat and drink something, likely wouldn't take 3 hours. But if your main intention is to socialise with a nice drink and some food...

In Spain we do the same. And I love it. We socialize, enjoy our meals. Savor it. We're not in a rush. Life goes too fast as it is

I’ve noticed that too, but isn’t it more about ‘keeping the table’ for longer? Like, ‘I’m not finished yet, so they can’t ask me to leave and free up the space’?
