Nearly 10 million Americans are under flood watches as a powerful monsoon system threatens parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado with extremely heavy rain. Forecasters say some locations could see rainfall rates of two to three inches per hour, creating a serious risk of flash flooding in canyons, near burn scars and along waterways. AccuWeather meteorologists said isolated areas could receive as much as 12 inches of rain. Meteorologist Tyler Roys called a foot of rain across the region a “1-in-1,000-year event,” while stressing that such totals are not expected everywhere and would most likely occur only in isolated locations. Phoenix and Tucson could receive roughly two to four inches before Friday. Flash flood warnings have already been issued in several areas, including around Phoenix, the Grand Canyon and parts of Utah and Colorado. Officials are urging drivers not to enter flooded roads. The National Weather Service warned, “Turn around, don’t drown,” noting that many flood D*eaths happen inside vehicles. At least one motorist has already needed rescue from roadway flooding in Arizona, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The danger is made worse by extremely dry ground across parts of the Southwest. Parched soil may struggle to absorb intense rainfall quickly, allowing water to rush across roads and low-lying areas within minutes. Still, the rain could bring some relief to drought-stricken parts of the Colorado River Basin. Would you evacuate early if flash flooding was forecast near your home? #ArizonaWeather #FlashFlooding #SouthwestWeather #FloodWatch #SevereWeather
