The walk begins gently before climbing steadily towards Harter Fell, where the first panoramic views begin to unfold. Looking back over Haweswater, the valley stretches away beneath dramatic skies, with the changing light painting the fells in ever-shifting shades of green and gold. From Harter Fell, the route follows the airy ridge to Mardale Ill Bell, a quieter summit that rewards with breathtaking views across the remote eastern fells. The landscape here feels wonderfully wild, with rocky outcrops, sweeping ridgelines and endless open space creating that unmistakable feeling of escaping into the heart of the Lake District. Continuing onto High Street, one of England's most fascinating summits, you're walking along the route of an ancient Roman road that once crossed these mountains. Standing on the broad plateau, it's easy to imagine Roman soldiers making the same journey nearly 2,000 years ago. Despite its gentle summit, the surrounding views are simply immense, stretching across the Helvellyn range, the Far Eastern Fells and beyond. The ridge then leads to Rampsgill Head, where the dramatic cliffs plunge steeply into the hidden valley below. This section is arguably one of the finest viewpoints on the walk, offering spectacular perspectives over Blea Water and the rugged terrain that makes this corner of the Lakes so special. The final summit, Kidsty Pike, is a fitting grand finale. Its rocky summit provides arguably one of the finest views of Haweswater Reservoir, with the long ribbon of water winding through the valley below.
