@stephysays.japan: #izakaya 🍻🍢 Are you curious about Japanese izakaya? Check this post for all you need to know! 1- Izakaya are more like pubs or even tapas bars than bars in that it's for drinking *and* eating. Usually you get some food, even just small plates, and unlike bars the food should be good! 2- You should order your first drink quickly; it's good to have a standard first drink you like to say quickly, such as beer/highball/Coke. A national standard is "I'll have a beer for now," which is "Toriaezu biiru," but you can order anything (not just beer) 3- You might get a surprise dish or charge; this is called an "otōshi," often called a table charge in English. That's normal at izakaya, they're not being sneaky, so don't leave them a bad review for that lol 4- This one isn't a huge deal, but when ordering food it's best to let just 1 person order. You're probably ordering a bunch of small plates instead of one meal per person anyway, and Japanese staff isn't used to jumping between many people 5- Typical drinks at izakaya include draft (lager) beer, highball, lemon sour, and umeshu (plum wine), and soft drinks like cola, ginger ale, orange juice, and oolong tea (no diet soda) 6- Ordering: "I'll have a __, please" is "__ onegaishimasu".
