I love the read of the buffalo being a physical representation of her culture. It’s what kept her strong, what gave her a connection back to her family & people - & what she’d have to give up to become ‘one of’ her husband’s community, or accepted by said community.

I have a crossed cultural marriage. I married a Brazilian woman 26 years ago when we were first married, her mom came to visit my mom and her mom were over at our apartment and her mom wanted to make soup for us. She went in the freezer took out a T-bone steak that my mom had bought us as part of a wedding present and cut that up and put it in the soup my mom seeing this had a fit up into the day my mom died. She never let me forget that my mother-in-law used to T-bone steak in a soup.
