you need the discrete time version. we don't use the continuous time one as the signals are sampled. the FFT is the most common way. same idea though

Why are these constellation maps better to use to distinguish different words? Are these initial amplitude vs time graphs not precise enough? What even IS pure frequencies and why would they not be visible in the initial graphs?

but we don't actually manually calculate the Fourier transform but we use one of the most beautiful algorithms in math called the fast Fourier transform
