@aguyandagolden: Vet visits can be stressful, especially if you and your dog are not used to them. But routine checkups are one of the most important things you can do to keep them healthy and catch issues early. Last year, I took Teddy in for his first routine ultrasound. I had always told myself that as he got older, I wanted to stay ahead of anything that could come up, because with dogs, things can change fast. During that scan, they found a mass on his spleen. We decided to remove it and not take any chances. Thankfully, it wasn’t cancerous, but it could have grown or ruptured, which can be life-threatening. Since then, I make it a priority to take him in for a more in-depth visit, including ultrasounds, X-rays, bloodwork, and a full exam. I know not everyone can do all of that, but even just getting routine bloodwork can tell you a lot about your dog’s health. Talk to your vet about what makes sense for you, but this is a great place to start.
