I took time to study nearly every prayer about finances and provision in the Bible. And one thing surprised me. Not a single person prayed, “God, make me rich.” Today, many people are searching for prayers for financial breakthrough, wealth, or prosperity. But when you look at the prayers recorded in Scripture, you find something very different. Jacob prayed for food and clothing: “If God will be with me… and give me food to eat and clothes to wear…” (Genesis 28:20) Agur prayed: “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.” (Proverbs 30:8) David prayed: “Establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17) Jabez prayed: “Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my territory!” (1 Chronicles 4:10) And Jesus taught His disciples to pray: “Give us today our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) What do all these prayers have in common? The focus wasn’t money. They prayed for God’s blessing, wisdom, provision, fruitful work, and the ability to fulfill their God-given purpose. They trusted the Source more than the resources. That raises an important question for all of us: Am I seeking God, or am I only seeking what He can give me? Throughout Scripture, financial blessing was usually the result of walking with God—not the primary goal of prayer. Maybe the most powerful financial prayer is much simpler than we think: “Lord, bless the work of my hands and provide everything I need to fulfill Your purpose for my life.”
