I have a sister in law that does this to me every time i see her. The most recent was I was talking to her about how there was these boys in my middle school (15 years ago) who would constantly assault girls in the hallways and I had asked her if he middle school had a problem with that and she goes “no but I didn’t hang out with those type of people” and I was like ??? Me neither???

I love how you said “you just feel it.” I know exactly what you mean but then sometimes I self gaslight and talk myself out of it bc I’ve never been able to “trust my feelings “

I just read a book where the couple uses pseudohostility and regular hostility throughout the entire thing! The book is the only Woody Guthrie novel and it was written in the mid-late 1940s. I’m working on a review of the book and definitely will reference you because I would have not known what to call it if I hadn’t seen your videos.

I've gone full NPC script breaking and will respond with like "that's not really genuine question" or pull the "thats kind of an ugly thing to say"

Yeah my MIL makes comments like this all the time. It’s not on just what’s being said but how she’s saying it and the context. The week of Easter we saw her and she said to me “you must be so happy to not host Easter this year”. I’ve never hosted Easter, Easter is her holiday. We’ve been going to her house every year since 2011, with the expectation of 2025 because we were NC. Last year my husband and I stayed home for Easter, we didn’t host, it was just us. She also didn’t invite us to her Easter, so we obviously didn’t go and accepted an invite elsewhere. Her comment was very pointed.

my mom would say things to me like, "is that what you're wearing? did you fix your hair? oh! you have makeup on?" when I was a teenager and finally allowed to pick out my own outfits, fix my own hair etc. made me nit trust my instincts in those areas for many years. is that an example of this?

What about parents who act like they have a relationship with you even though they don’t? I find it really exhausting playing along like my dad knows me at all, it’s very clear to me it’s all a show.

These examples also remind me of something that really helped me understand this type of toxic communication. “A neutral is a negative.” neutral questions like those are negative and meant to be take. That way but they allow a back door for the person to say “I was just asking.” It’s so passive aggressive.

My mom was talking to me in a rude tone and I told her can you talk to me respectful. Especially since my kids were with us. She looked over to my baby and started to talk to her in a baby voice saying I guess I have to talk to you like a baby like I do with her(my baby)

my mil. and I felt crazy for a long time. because it didn't sound right to me, but it wasn't apparent to other people. also, I want to respond, but I only think of the right thing to say afterwards.

I have difficulty with social pragmatics - what is wrong with these questions? I can tell they are kind of boring but what is wrong with asking if a dress is new or if hair is dyed? I guess the point is the questions are asked with a certain tone
